Preventative Care and Dental Hygiene

Preventative care and diagnostic services include:

  • Check-Ups and Cleanings – It is important to bring in any new medication you are using so we can keep your medical history up to date.Every year we will asses your gums by recording probing depths and recessions. This allows our dentists to accurately diagnose any gum disease and recommend appropriate treatments and scaling frequencies (3,4,6,9 or 12 months). Radiographs will be prescribed by the dentists as required. The dentist will do a thorough soft tissue exam. Velscope oral cancer screening is also available.
  • Periodontal Scaling – At your hygiene appointment the hygienist will remove any hard deposit (tartar, calculus) from your teeth.
  • Polishing – We offer many flavours of prophylaxis paste. For patients with extensive stain, we also have prophy-jets.
  • Fluoride Treatments – Fluoride treatments make enamel stronger. These will be applied if prescribed by the dentist.
    • Even with fluoride at optimal levels in our water supply, there has been a huge increase in decay rates in Canada. The leading cause of day surgery for children in Canada is dental decay. This is due to increases in consumption of sugary and acidic food and beverages as well as parents not brushing and flossing their children’s teeth. There is a statistically significant decrease in decay rates in children up to age 16 who have fluoride treatments. After age 16, there is no significant difference. We recommend it to people over 16 with active rampant decay and adults with exposed roots who are prone to decay. For best results, fluoride treatments should be done every 6 months. Some insurance plans only cover it yearly, so we are happy to help you check your coverage. If you only covered yearly you can then decide if you want it yearly or the recommended 6 month interval.
  • X-Rays – Bitewing radiographs are the best way to view decay on “top halvies” of upper and lower teeth at the same time. For teeth with more extensive problems, a periapical radiograph may be prescribed by the dentist. These radiographs allow the dentist to see the complete tooth and its supporting structures. Panoramic films are sometimes prescribed to view wisdom teeth or if pathology is suspected.
  • Invisalign – We are happy to now provide invisalign orthodontic treatment.
  • Pit and Fissure Sealants – On the tops and sides of molar and premolar teeth there are grooves and pits. Those grooves and pits are the tops of fissures that can penetrate deep into the tooth. The exist because molars and premolars form as separate cusps that fuse together. Commonly, they don’t fuse that well. These pits and fissures are too small for a tooth brush bristle to penetrate bu for bacteria they are wide like the 417 highway! By bonding a thin unfilled resin into the grooves the tooth is sealed. No new bacteria and food can get in, and the bacteria in the pits and fissures either die or go dormant. Without food, they cannot produce the acid that causes cavities. We generally like to place sealants as soon as the teeth have fully erupted. For children who gag easily we may delay treatment until the mouth gets a bit bigger, and until they have more emotional maturity and resiliency.
